The Vinos de Madrid DO covers vineyards in the Community of Madrid, from the Sierra de Guadarrama foothills to the Tagus River basin. The region sits between 500 and 1,000 meters and is divided into subzones with distinct soils, including granite, clay-limestone, and gypsum-rich marls. The continental climate is moderated by altitude.
Garnacha is the most important red grape, especially in the Sierra de Gredos-influenced San Martín de Valdeiglesias subzone, producing fragrant, elegant reds. Albillo Real and Malvar are the signature white grapes, yielding fresh, aromatic whites. Madrid's wine scene has grown in reputation for quality Garnacha from old vines.
