Lolland

Denmark's flat southern island, an emerging frontier for cool-climate viticulture.

Overview

Lolland lies south of Zealand in the Baltic Sea, a low-lying island of farmland, beaches, and quiet villages. Its southern position gives it a slightly longer and warmer growing season than many other Danish regions, while the surrounding sea keeps temperatures moderate. Viticulture is still young here but expanding quickly as growers identify favorable sites.

The island is part of the emerging Lolland and Møn wine area, where small producers experiment with PIWI hybrids and classic varieties. Expect fresh, light-bodied wines with bright acidity, often made in small volumes and sold through farm shops and local restaurants.

Key Varietals

  • SolarisA reliable white hybrid producing crisp, floral wines.
  • RondoAn early-ripening red hybrid for fresh reds and rosés.
  • Pinot NoirA delicate red tested on Lolland's warmest, wind-sheltered sites.
  • ChardonnayA white variety used for still and sparkling wines.
