Ljubuški

A warm Herzegovinian town where family wineries blend tradition with modern Mediterranean hospitality.

Overview

Ljubuški lies in the western part of Herzegovina, close to the Croatian border, and is best known in wine circles for the Nuić family estate, one of the largest quality-focused producers in the region. The area shares the same karst terroir and sunny Mediterranean climate as Čitluk and Mostar, with vineyards planted on gentle hillsides above the Trebižat River.

Like the rest of Herzegovina, Žilavka and Blatina are the signature grapes, supported by Vranac and small plantings of international varieties. Many wineries here combine tastings with full meals, making Ljubuški an easy entry point for visitors exploring the Herzegovina Wine Route for the first time.

Key Varietals

  • ŽilavkaA crisp, mineral white that matches the region's seafood and river trout dishes.
  • BlatinaA dry, structured red with dark cherry and herbal notes from the local limestone.
  • VranacA robust red that adds body and tannin to Herzegovinian blends.
  • ChardonnayAn international white that takes on fresh, unoaked character in the local climate.
