Overview
Limburg is the undisputed center of Dutch viticulture. Its gently rolling southern hills, rare in a famously flat country, lift vineyards above frost pockets and capture extra sunshine. The province hosts the country's oldest and largest estate, Apostelhoeve near Maastricht, alongside celebrated producers such as Sint Martinus, Hoeve Nekum, and Wijngoed Thorn. Three protected Dutch wine appellations - Maasvallei, Mergelland, and Vijlen - are located here.
The Jeker Valley and the loess- and limestone-rich slopes around Valkenburg and Maastricht provide the best terroir. Growers blend classic cool-climate varieties with modern fungus-resistant hybrids, producing fresh whites, light reds, and an increasing amount of traditional-method sparkling wine.
