La Rioja

Overview

Argentine La Rioja is one of the country's oldest wine regions, with vines first planted by Spanish missionaries in the sixteenth century. The province sits at high altitude in the foothills of the Andes, where a hot, arid climate and alluvial soils shape powerful, sun-drenched wines.

Torrontés Riojano, a distinctive strain of Argentina's signature white grape, takes its name from this region. Malbec and Bonarda also perform well here, producing wines of warmth and generosity that reflect La Rioja's frontier spirit.
