Overview
Kent lies directly across the Channel from Calais and is one of England's most important wine counties. Producers such as Chapel Down, Gusbourne, Biddenden, and Simpsons have put Kent on the global map with traditional-method sparkling wines and aromatic still whites. The region's south-facing slopes and long growing season help grapes reach excellent ripeness.
The Garden of England shares the same chalk and limestone geology as Champagne and Sussex, giving wines a pronounced mineral character. Kent generally records more sunshine hours and lower rainfall than most English counties, making it especially suited to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and the aromatic Bacchus grape.
