Kartli Vineyards
Central Georgia, around Tbilisi along the Mtkvari River valley

Kartli

Georgia's classically minded central region, prized for high-acid whites, elegant sparkling wines, and refined reds.

Overview

Kartli surrounds the capital Tbilisi and stretches along the Mtkvari River and its tributaries, forming Georgia's geographic and cultural core. Vineyards sit mainly between 300 and 800 meters in river basins and rolling uplands, where a cooler, more continental climate than Kakheti preserves bright acidity and mineral freshness. The region has long been associated with classic European-influenced winemaking as well as traditional qvevri methods.

Key grapes include Chinuri and Goruli Mtsvane for whites, plus Tavkveri and Shavkapito for reds; the Atenuri PDO is famous for crisp, sparkling styles. The mix of alluvial-carbonaceous, brown meadow, and limestone-rich soils gives Kartli wines their characteristic structure and finesse. Family estates and modern wineries alike are reviving indigenous varieties and crafting fresh, terroir-driven wines.

Key Varietals

  • ChinuriA high-acid white grape that forms the backbone of Kartli's sparkling and still white wines.
  • Goruli MtsvaneA fragrant white variety prized for elegant wines with citrus and floral notes.
  • TavkveriA versatile red grape that gives bright, medium-bodied reds, rosés, and sparkling wines.
  • ShavkapitoA rare indigenous red with Pinot-like elegance, chalky minerality, and bright red fruit.
