Južnoslovenská

Slovakia's warmest wine region, where full-bodied reds and luscious late-harvest whites flourish.

Overview

Južnoslovenská lies just north of the Danube in the warmest corner of Slovakia. The long growing season, abundant sunshine, and loess-covered hills create ideal conditions for ripe grapes and wines with attribute, from late harvest to ice and straw wines. Sub-regions such as Štúrovský, Strekovský, and Hurbanovský are especially prized.

This is the birthplace of Slovakia's first Riesling to appear in Wine Spectator, and the region continues to excel with Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and the Slovak red crossing Dunaj. Warm sites also ripen Cabernet Sauvignon and Frankovka modrá to a rich, polished style rarely found elsewhere in the country.

Key Varietals

  • RieslingThe region's most celebrated white, achieving ripe stone fruit and citrus depth while retaining refreshing acidity.
  • Frankovka modráA warm-climate Blaufränkisch that delivers ripe plum, spice, and supple tannins in fuller-bodied reds.
  • Müller-ThurgauA soft, approachable white that produces gentle floral and pear notes on the region's fertile loess soils.
  • Cabernet SauvignonRipe and structured, showing cassis and herb character in this unusually warm Slovak setting.
