Istria

A heart-shaped peninsula where Malvazija and Teran capture the flavors of the northern Adriatic.

Overview

Istria is Croatia's northernmost wine region, a heart-shaped peninsula shared by Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The Croatian part is known for its rolling hills, red terra rossa soils, and a Mediterranean climate moderated by the Adriatic Sea. The region has become one of Croatia's most popular wine tourism destinations.

Malvazija Istarska, an aromatic white, is Istria's flagship variety, while Teran produces earthy, tart reds. The hilltop towns of Motovun, Grožnjan, and Buje are surrounded by vineyards, and producers such as Kozlović, Matošević, and Trapan have raised the region's international profile.

Key Varietals

  • Malvazija IstarskaAn aromatic white with notes of citrus, almonds, and Mediterranean herbs.
  • TeranA high-acid red with earthy, red-berry flavors and a distinctive iron-like minerality.
  • MuškatA sweet or dry white produced from Muscat grapes in the region's warmer sites.
