Gyeongsangbuk-do

Overview

Gyeongsangbuk-do is South Korea's largest grape-growing province by area, with the Gyeongsan and Yeongcheon districts forming the heart of the national wine industry. This is the home of Majuang, Korea's most famous wine brand, and of Wine Korea, one of the country's largest integrated wineries. Sheltered inland basins give the region warm days and cool nights during ripening, while well-drained soils help offset the humid summer monsoon.

The region's wineries blend Korean-grown Seibel and Muscat Bailey A with imported wines, while also cultivating international varieties on estate vineyards. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay are increasingly important, and research stations in Yeongcheon have successfully trialed Kerner, Sémillon, and Vidal. The combination of scale, tradition, and experimentation makes Gyeongsangbuk-do the closest thing Korea has to a classic wine region.
