Gyeonggi-do Vineyards
Northwestern South Korea, surrounding Seoul and extending to the central western plains around Anseong and Yeoju

Gyeonggi-do

Seoul's vineyard backyard, where continental seasons and free-draining valley soils shape crisp hybrid whites and fruity reds.

Overview

Gyeonggi-do is South Korea's most populous province, but its southern reaches around Anseong and Yeoju have long been important for table-grape production and are now emerging as wine country. The region sits just south of the capital on gentle plains and low hills, giving growers easy market access and a classic Korean continental climate: cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers punctuated by the July monsoon.

Vineyards here rely on disease-resistant hybrids and labruscas that can tolerate summer wetness and winter cold. Campbell Early and Muscat Bailey A are widely planted, while Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown on selected slopes with good drainage. Sandy loam and alluvial soils dominate, and many growers use rain shelters and careful canopy management to protect fruit during the humid harvest period.

Key Varietals

  • Campbell EarlyA popular American hybrid red producing soft, fruity wines with grapey aromas and gentle tannins that suit Korean palates.
  • Muscat Bailey AA fragrant Japanese-origin hybrid giving light red wines with strawberry, cherry, and floral muscat notes.
  • ChardonnayA crisp white with green apple and citrus character, picked early to preserve acidity in the warm, wet summers.
  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured Bordeaux red grown on the best-drained slopes, showing dark berry, herb, and firm tannins.
