Overview
Goriška Brda is a landscape of green, terraced hills that continue seamlessly into Italy's Collio, sharing the same geology and viticultural culture. Vineyards lie between 80 and 400 meters above sea level, just a short distance from the Adriatic but cooled by Alpine air. This combination creates warm days, cool nights, and a long ripening season that builds aroma and acidity.
The dominant opoka soils, a flysch mix of clay, marl, limestone, and sandstone, drain well and lend a marked mineral signature. Rebula is the signature grape, made in styles from fresh and crisp to oaked, sparkling, and amber macerated versions. Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Merlot also thrive here, producing precise, food-friendly wines.
Key Varietals
- RebulaThe queen of Brda, an ancient white grape that yields crisp dry whites, textured orange wines, and sparkling styles.
- Pinot GrisA pink-skinned variety that gives aromatic, medium-bodied whites with stone-fruit, almond, and mineral notes.
- ChardonnayAn international white that produces fresh, mineral-driven wines and richer barrel-aged expressions in Brda's hills.
- MerlotA red variety widely planted in Brda, producing plush, rounded wines with dark berry and spice character.
