Overview

Gansu is a developing wine region in northwestern China, with vineyards around Tianshui and Wuwei along the ancient Silk Road. The region's high altitude, dry climate, and strong sunshine create conditions for cool-climate reds and aromatic whites, though production remains small compared to Ningxia or Shandong.

Producers such as Domaine Xigu have drawn attention to Gansu's potential for Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The continental climate with cold winters requires vines to be buried, but the long growing season and clean air contribute to wines with fresh acidity and pure fruit.
