Funen Vineyards
Funen (Fyn), Denmark

Funen

Denmark's garden island, where vineyards dot rolling hills between the Great Belt and the Little Belt.

Overview

Funen, known to Danes as Fyn, is the central island that bridges Jutland and Zealand. Its south- and east-facing slopes capture extra sunshine and are moderated by the surrounding straits, creating pockets that are especially favorable for viticulture. Vineyards cluster near Nyborg, Odense, and along the island's sheltered coastlines.

The island is home to Stokkebye Vingård and other small, quality-focused producers who combine gastronomy with winemaking. Funen's wines are typically fresh and fruit-driven, led by Solaris whites, Rondo and Pinot Noir reds, and an increasing range of traditional-method sparkling wines.

Key Varietals

  • SolarisThe workhorse white hybrid, giving floral, citrusy wines and excellent sparkling base.
  • RondoA reliable red hybrid producing bright cherry and red-berry wines.
  • Pinot NoirA delicate red that performs on Funen's warmest, best-drained slopes.
  • ChardonnayA white variety used for structured still wines and elegant sparklings.
