Overview
Essaouira is home to Domaine du Val d'Argan, Morocco's first certified organic winery, set about 20 to 30 kilometers inland from the Atlantic near the village of Ounagha. The estate was founded in 1994 by Charles Mélia, a Châteauneuf-du-Pape vigneron who saw potential in the region's blend of oceanic influence, red desert soils, and abundant sunshine. Argan trees dot the landscape, giving the vineyard a distinctly Moroccan character.
Cool, foggy mornings and warm afternoons extend the growing season, while Atlantic breezes temper the summer heat. The soils are sandy and free-draining, often reddish and low in organic matter, forcing vines to dig deep. Mélia planted a palette of Rhône varieties, and the estate is now celebrated for Syrah-led reds, Grenache-based rosés, and fresh whites from Vermentino, Clairette, and Viognier.
