Empordà Vineyards
Northeastern Catalonia, along the Costa Brava from the French border to the Gavarres Mountains

Empordà

Where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean, producing windswept Garnatxa and mineral whites.

Overview

Empordà is Catalonia's northernmost wine region, a coastal landscape of rugged hills, granite outcrops, and sea-facing terraces. The powerful Tramontana wind shapes the vineyards, controlling humidity and stressing the vines. The climate is Mediterranean with marine influence, producing wines of concentration and freshness.

Garnatxa is the historic red grape, producing powerful, earthy reds and rosés, often blended with Cariñena, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Whites are made from Garnatxa Blanca, Macabeo, and Muscat. Empordà has a growing reputation for natural and low-intervention wines that express its wild, coastal terroir.

Key Varietals

  • GarnatxaThe emblematic red grape of Empordà, giving wines with red fruit, herbs, and Mediterranean warmth.
  • CariñenaA local red variety that adds acidity, color, and savory depth to Empordà blends.
  • SyrahAn international grape contributing dark fruit, pepper, and structure.
  • Garnatxa BlancaA white mutation of Garnatxa, producing textured, mineral whites with stone fruit.
