El Carmen Vineyards
Santander, Colombia

El Carmen

An emerging Andean wine area near Barichara, where boutique projects explore high-altitude viticulture.

Overview

El Carmen is a municipality in the Santander department of northeastern Colombia, near the beautifully preserved colonial town of Barichara. Vineyards here sit at high altitude in the Eastern Andes, where warm days and cool nights allow grapes to ripen slowly and retain acidity despite the tropical latitude.

Wine production in the area is still small and experimental, with a handful of boutique wineries working with international varieties. The region is part of a broader wave of Colombian high-altitude viticulture that has gained momentum around Villa de Leyva, Santander, and the outskirts of Bogotá.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red that benefits from the region's strong diurnal temperature shift.
  • MerlotA soft, fruity red suited to the warm days of Santander's high valleys.
  • SyrahA spicy, full-bodied red that performs in the sunny Andean conditions.
  • ChardonnayA crisp white that retains freshness at altitude.
