Overview
Eger sits where the Northern Range meets the Great Plain, protected by the Mátra and Bükk mountains from harsh northerly winds. Its Baroque town center and castle overlook vineyards planted on volcanic rhyolite tuff, brown forest soils, and the famous limestone of Nagy-Eged Hill, one of Hungary's most prized single vineyards.
The region is best known for Egri Bikavér, the 'Bull's Blood' red blend based on Kékfrankos and Kadarka, and for Egri Csillag, its crisp white counterpart. Eger also produces elegant single-varietal Kékfrankos, Kadarka, Pinot Noir, and fresh whites from Leányka, Olaszrizling, and Chardonnay.
Key Varietals
- KékfrankosThe backbone of Egri Bikavér, giving bright acidity, red cherry fruit, and spicy structure to blends and varietal wines.
- KadarkaA historic, thin-skinned red that adds floral perfume, pepper, and silky texture to Eger's blends.
- LeánykaA fresh, aromatic white grape that forms part of Egri Csillag and thrives on Eger's cool, mineral slopes.
- ChardonnayA barrel-friendly white that develops ripe orchard fruit and subtle oak spice on Eger's volcanic and limestone soils.
