Durrës

Albania's ancient coastal gateway, where vineyards meet the Adriatic Sea.

Overview

Durrës is Albania's oldest city and a historic coastal gateway with a winemaking tradition that stretches back to ancient Greek and Roman times. The surrounding plains and low hills benefit from a mild maritime climate, with sea breezes tempering the summer heat and extending the growing season.

While much of the region is devoted to agriculture and tourism, a small number of wineries cultivate both indigenous and international varieties. Durrës offers an accessible introduction to Albanian wine, often enjoyed alongside fresh seafood in restaurants overlooking the Adriatic.

Key Varietals

  • Shesh i BardhëA fresh, floral white grape that retains its acidity in the coastal climate.
  • Shesh i ZiA rustic red variety producing wines with red fruit and earthy undertones.
  • MerlotAn international red that ripens reliably in Durrës's warm, sheltered sites.
  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red that adds depth and aging potential to local blends.
