Cundinamarca

High-altitude vineyards on the plateau surrounding Bogotá, Colombia's capital wine frontier.

Overview

Cundinamarca is the department that surrounds Bogotá, Colombia's capital, on the high Andean plateau known as the Altiplano Cundiboyacense. Vineyards here sit at elevations above 2,500 meters in some cases, making them among the highest in the world.

The cool temperatures, intense sun, and strong diurnal shifts allow grapes to ripen slowly despite the proximity to the equator. Production is tiny and experimental, with small wineries working with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc for the Bogotá market.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red with herbal and cassis notes from extreme altitude.
  • MerlotA soft, fruity red that ripens in the region's sunny mountain valleys.
  • ChardonnayA crisp white with citrus and mineral notes from the cool plateau.
  • Sauvignon BlancA fresh, aromatic white that retains acidity at high elevation.
