Cornwall's modern wine industry began with the planting of Camel Valley in 1978, and the region now counts pioneering estates such as Looe Valley and Darnibole among its producers. Camel Valley has shown that sparkling wines made from classic varieties can excel here, while still wines from Germanic grapes are gaining notice.

The peninsula's climate is strongly maritime and Atlantic-influenced, keeping winters mild but exposing vineyards to wet westerly weather. Soils vary from Devonian slate and granite to sandy loams, and many growers rely on disease-resistant varieties and careful canopy management to succeed.
