Overview
Coonawarra is a name that commands reverence among Australian wine lovers. Situated in the Limestone Coast zone of South Australia, this tiny region, just 27 kilometres long and barely 2 kilometres wide is defined by a single, extraordinary geological feature: a ribbon of vivid red soil known as terra rossa, laid over ancient limestone bedrock. It is here, on this slender strip, that some of the country's most structured and long-lived wines are grown.
The region's history dates to 1891 when Scottish pioneer John Riddoch established the first vineyards and built the iconic triple-gabled winery that still stands today, now home to Wynns Coonawarra Estate. For decades, Coonawarra was known primarily as a source of premium fruit for large wine companies, but the rise of family owned estates such as Leconfield, Penley, Balnaves, and Redman has cemented its reputation as a destination for world class, terroir driven wines.
Coonawarra's cool maritime climate, influenced by the Southern Ocean, delivers a long, slow ripening season that preserves acidity while allowing complex flavour development. The signature Cabernet Sauvignon is renowned for its cassis and blackcurrant purity, fine-grained tannins, and distinctive mint and eucalyptus notes. The region also produces exceptional Shiraz, Merlot, and Chardonnay each shaped by the unique interplay of terra rossa, limestone, and cool coastal breezes.
