Overview

The Columbia Valley AVA is the largest wine region in Washington, covering roughly eleven million acres and containing about 99 percent of the state's vineyard plantings. The Cascade Range blocks Pacific moisture, creating an arid continental climate with hot summer days, cold nights, and very low rainfall. Irrigation from the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima rivers is essential, allowing growers precise control over vine stress.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Riesling are the leading varieties, with Bordeaux-style red blends commanding the most international attention. The region's large diurnal temperature swings preserve acidity and aromatic freshness, giving wines a signature combination of ripe fruit and structural precision.
