Overview

Catalonia is one of Spain's most important and diverse wine regions, stretching along the Mediterranean coast and inland to the Pyrenees foothills. It produces roughly a quarter of all Spanish wine across ten DOs, including Penedès, Priorat, Montsant, Empordà, and Cava. The climate is broadly Mediterranean but varies sharply from cool coastal hills to hot inland valleys.

Catalan wine culture is innovative and export-oriented, with Barcelona as its historic commercial gateway. Xarel·lo, Macabeo, Parellada, Garnatxa, Cariñena, and Monastrell are the native stars, joined by many international varieties. The region is equally famous for Cava, powerful Priorat reds, and fresh Mediterranean whites.
