Bierzo

Overview

Bierzo is a small, bowl-shaped valley in the mountains of León, shielded from the harsh continental plateau and open to Atlantic influence. The landscape is a mix of rolling hills, river valleys, and steep slopes with slate, quartzite, and clay soils. The climate is milder and wetter than surrounding Castilla y León, creating ideal conditions for Mencía.

Mencía is the star red grape, producing medium-bodied wines with red berry, floral, and mineral notes that are often compared to Pinot Noir or Cabernet Franc. Godello, Palomino, and Garnacha Tintorera are also grown. Bierzo has attracted international attention for its elegant, site-expressive reds and crisp whites.
