Overview
Berkane lies in the northeastern corner of Morocco, forming part of the Oriental wine region alongside the Angad and Beni Sadden AOGs. The city sits on the fertile Tarifa plain, roughly 20 to 40 kilometers from the Mediterranean and the Algerian border, with the Beni Snassen mountains rising to the south. The climate is hot semi-arid with Mediterranean influences, giving warm to hot summers, mild winters, and most rainfall in autumn and winter.
The appellation is best known for Muscat de Berkane, a naturally sweet wine made from Muscat d'Alexandrie that has won international medals. Yet Berkane also produces red and rosé wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Grenache, with Domaine des Trois Cavaliers concentrating much of the regional harvest. Citrus groves and vineyards share the plain, reflecting the area's agricultural wealth.
