Bălți Vineyards
Northern Moldova, around the city of Bălți

Bălți

Moldova's northernmost wine region, where cooler winters and warm, dry summers favor crisp whites and brandy distillation.

Overview

Bălți is Moldova's smallest and northernmost wine region, centered on the city of Bălți and now administratively included within the broader Codru PGI. Its continental climate brings longer, colder winters and warm, dry summers, creating conditions that favor white grape varieties and retain bright acidity. Much of the region's production historically supplied base wine for divin, Moldova's oak-aged wine spirit.

Vineyards grow on fertile chernozem and lighter, well-drained soils across gently rolling northern terrain. The cooler climate produces crisp, aromatic whites with floral and fresh-fruit profiles, while also supporting Aligoté and other varieties used in distillation. Though compact, Bălți remains an important part of Moldova's viticultural mosaic.

Key Varietals

  • Fetească AlbăMoldova's classic white grape, expressing northern freshness through floral aromas and crisp citrus fruit.
  • Sauvignon BlancA cool-climate favorite here, producing lively, herbaceous wines with green fruit and mineral edges.
  • ChardonnayPlanted for fresh still whites and brandy base wines, showing apple, citrus, and clean acidity.
  • AligotéA high-acid white variety widely used for crisp table wines and as a base for distilling divin.
