Overview
Balatonfüred-Csopak stretches along the northern shore of Lake Balaton, Central Europe's largest lake, with vineyards climbing the slopes of the Balaton Highlands. The district combines eastern basalt and tuff soils with western dolomite and marl, creating two distinct expressions of white wine within one PDO.
Csopak is itself a recognized sub-appellation focused exclusively on Olaszrizling and Furmint, producing some of Hungary's most distinctive dry whites. The lakeside location moderates temperatures, while the Tagore Promenade and wine weeks make the area one of Hungary's most popular wine-tourism destinations.
Key Varietals
- OlaszrizlingThe dominant variety of the district, yielding crisp, saline whites with green apple and almond notes.
- FurmintA volcanic white that adds structure, citrus, and smoky minerality to Csopak's most serious wines.
- JuhfarkA rare, high-acid white that produces textured, age-worthy wines on the basalt slopes near the lake.
- KéknyelűAn ancient Balaton variety with lean, mineral character and restrained stone-fruit aromas.
