Badacsony

Overview

Badacsony is dominated by Mount Badacsony, an extinct volcanic butte whose basalt and tuff slopes rise directly from the northern shore of Lake Balaton. The region's 'witness mountains' are the remnants of ancient volcanic activity, and their rocky, mineral-rich soils give the wines a pronounced smoky, saline character.

White grapes dominate, led by Olaszrizling, Szürkebarát, and the rare indigenous Kéknyelű. Terraced vineyards capture reflected sunlight from the lake, and the combination of volcanic soils and lake-moderated climate produces textured, age-worthy whites with a cult following among Hungarian wine enthusiasts.
