Antioquia, Colombia

Antioquia

Colombia's emerging wine region in the mountains above Medellín.

Overview

Antioquia, best known for Medellín and Colombia's coffee region, is also home to a small but growing number of high-altitude vineyards in the Andes. The department's steep slopes, spring-like temperatures, and reliable rainfall create conditions that are increasingly attractive for boutique viticulture.

Wine production here is still in its early stages, with most wineries focusing on small batches of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. The proximity to Medellín makes Antioquia an accessible destination for wine tourism as the industry develops.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red that gains elegance from Antioquia's high-altitude sites.
  • MerlotA soft, approachable red suited to the region's mild mountain climate.
  • Sauvignon BlancA crisp, herbaceous white with fresh acidity.
  • ChardonnayA light, citrus-driven white from the coolest vineyard locations.
