Almaty Vineyards
Southeastern Kazakhstan, in the foothills of the Tian Shan and Zailiyskiy Alatau mountains near the former capital

Almaty

The cradle of modern Kazakh wine, where high-altitude valleys at the foot of the Tian Shan produce bold reds and aromatic whites.

Overview

Almaty is the historic heart of Kazakh viticulture, with roots stretching back to the Silk Road and archaeological evidence of Vitis vinifera cultivation in the Assa Valley dating back two and a half millennia. The region's revival began when abandoned Soviet-era vineyards near the village of Karakemer were restored at elevations around 1,000 meters, where the Zailiyskiy Alatau range shields the vines and creates a dramatic continental climate. Producers such as Arba Wine, Turgen, and Issyk have put Almaty on the map by blending Georgian heritage grapes with French and international varieties.

The Assa and Turgen river valleys give the vineyards rocky, mineral-rich soils with high stone content, while sharp day-night temperature swings preserve acidity despite hot summer days. Because phylloxera never reached Kazakhstan, many old vines remain on their own roots, adding unusual depth to the wines. The combination of altitude, low humidity, and free-draining soils yields concentrated reds, fragrant whites, and age-worthy wines that are beginning to attract international attention.

Key Varietals

  • RkatsiteliA Georgian white variety prized in Almaty for its bright acidity, citrus notes, and ability to retain freshness at altitude.
  • SaperaviA teinturier red from Georgia that produces deeply colored, full-bodied wines with black fruit and spice in the Assa Valley.
  • Cabernet SauvignonAn international red that thrives in the warm days and cool nights of the Almaty foothills, yielding structured, age-worthy wines.
  • RieslingA cool-climate white that captures mountain freshness, delivering aromatic wines with stone fruit and crisp acidity.
